G.W. Wickman opened a souvenier photo shop on Mackinac Island around 1900 and developed a line of Mackinac Island postcards. In 1946 he hired Robert E. Benjamin to develop and print pictures. Bob moved the work to the basement of his grandfather's Market Street home. After Wickman died in 1950, Bob was able to rent, then purchase the building where he had his shop on Main Street, the current location of the Benjamin Photo & Gift Shop.
